Article 8 - Physical Security That Works Offline

Security must work without internet and without cloud services.
Many consumer security systems fail when Wi-Fi drops or power is out. When either is lost, surveillance stops, alerts fail, and evidence disappears. A resilient security posture functions locally and continues recording even when disconnected from the cloud. Real protection depends on local control, reliable recording, and layers that deter intrusion while preserving evidence. Physical protection is not about gadgets; it is about layered design that assumes signal disruption, power loss, and human error.
We Are Red Teaming: Overreliance on cloud cameras, smart locks, and Wi-Fi dependent alarms that fail when power or connectivity drops, recognizing that bad actors have access to low cost signal interference devices capable of defeating consumer-grade systems when security matters most.
Mitigation Actions:
· Alarm systems: Use hardwired, locally controlled panels with battery backup.
· Cameras: Use wired PoE cameras and a DVR or NVR with local storage and redundant off-site mirroring. Avoid consumer cloud cameras.
· Coverage: Eliminate blind spots at entries, driveways, and along the perimeter.
· Perimeter reinforcement: Use laminated (not tempered) glass on ground floors, reinforced doors, and motion lighting.
· Defensive landscaping. Place thorny plants below ground floor windows and keep hedges trimmed for sightlines.
· Manual overrides: Ensure locks and garage doors operate without external power.
· Signal risk: Design for local recording that continues during interference.
If the internet failed for a week or you lost power, would your system still deter, detect, and document an intrusion? Test it before a criminal or a crisis does.
